Blocked auger in the pellet feeder - what should be done?

The screw feeder is the key of a pellet boiler - it is responsible for even feeding of fuel and stable operation of the device. However, it happens that it gets blocked, which stops heating. Find out what to do when the stove does not feed pellets.

Why does the auger in the feeder lock up?

Before you move on, it's helpful to understand why the problem is occurring in the first place. The most common causes are:

  • Poor quality of pellets - too much wood dust, impurities or pellets of non-standard diameter can cause the fuel to jam.
  • Foreign bodies in the hopper - it happens that elements get into the hopper that should not be there, such as pieces of wood, metal parts, pebbles.
  • Too much moisture in the pellets - wet pellets stick together, forming lumps that block the auger.
  • Wear or damage to mechanical components - we are talking about bearings, clutch or the auger itself, which can become worn out and lose their efficiency.

What steps should be taken when the stove does not feed pellets?

If you notice that the pellet stove has stopped feeding fuel, first of all, remain calm and do not try to forcefully start the auger. Actions under pressure can end up seriously damaging the mechanism. Here's what you should do:

  1. turn off the stove and disconnect it from the power supply. This is crucial for your safety - the feeder must not be live while you're poking around in it.
  2. Empty the pellet hopper. It's best to pick it out into a bucket or bag so you have easy access to the auger. 3 Check for a foreign object stuck in the auger. Sometimes it is enough to pull out a small element to make the whole mechanism work properly.
  3. remove any clumps of pellets. Dried or wet pellets can act as a wedge, blocking the rotation of the auger.

How to safely unblock the auger?

Many boilers have special inspection flaps or components that allow access to the feeder. Proceed step by step:

  • Locate the revision in the feeder.
  • Carefully remove any obstruction, using a wooden stick or other tool that will not damage the metal.
  • If the auger still won't turn, check the clutch - it's the one that often gets damaged when it suddenly locks up.

Remember never to use excessive force. If you are not sure what is blocking the mechanism, it is better to call for service.

When to call a professional?

If your efforts have been unsuccessful, the auger still does not work or there is damage to the clutch, the best solution is to contact a service center. Attempting to disassemble the entire feeder yourself without the proper tools and experience may end up with higher repair costs.

Frequently asked questions

1. Can a blocked auger damage the feeder motor?

Yes, if the device tries to forcefully rotate the blocked auger, it can overload and burn the motor. Therefore, it is important to quickly turn off the furnace after detecting the problem.

How often should I clean the feeder in the pellet stove?

It is best to check the feeder every few weeks, and carry out a thorough cleaning at least once per heating season.

3. Can I use an industrial vacuum cleaner to remove dust from the feeder?

Yes, this is a good solution, provided that the vacuum cleaner is designed to handle fine wood dust. This will make it easier to maintain cleanliness and reduce the risk of blockages.

4. Is homemade pellets suitable for the screw feeder?

Definitely no. Non-certified pellets or those made from unreliable raw material usually contain impurities and have an uneven diameter, which can quickly lead to feeder failure.
